Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily

Liriope muscari is a species of low, herbaceous flowering plants from East Asia. Common names in English include big blue lilyturf, lilyturf, border grass, and monkey grass. It is a perennial with grass-like evergreen foliage and lilac-purple flowers which produce single seeded berries on a spike in the fall. The roots, which often have fleshy tubers near their tip, are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Forests, bamboo forests, scrub, shady and moist places in ravines and on slopes; 100--1400(--2000) m. Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Shandong, Sichuan, Taiwan, Zhejiang [Japan]. It is a tufted, grass-like perennial which typically grows 12-18 inches (30 to 45 cm) tall and features clumps of strap-like, arching, glossy, dark green leaves. Clumps slowly expand by short stolons to a width of about 1 foot (30 cm), but plants do not spread aggressively.
