Definition

A tricyclic sesquiterpenoid that is 4-methylidenedecahydro-1H-cyclopropa[e]azulene carrying three methyl substituents at positions 1, 1 and 7 as well as a hydroxy substituent at position 7.

Standard InChI

InChI=1S/C15H24O/c1-9-5-6-11-13(14(11,2)3)12-10(9)7-8-15(12,4)16/h10-13,16H,1,5-8H2,2-4H3/t10-,11+,12+,13+,15-/m0/s1

Biological Activity

Spathulenol may be one of the immunomodulatory compounds present in Salvia mirzayanii, it shows the capacity to inhibit proliferation in the lymphocytes and to induce apoptosis in these cells possibly through a caspase-3 independent pathway; treatment of activated lymphocytes with a concentrated fraction containing 62% of spathulenol shows a decrease in the proliferation of lymphocytes with an IC 50 of 85.4 ± 11.08ug/mL. [1]
Spathulenol presents moderate or low cytotoxicity with IC50 higher than 6uM, it is a good candidate to be used in combination chemotherapy of MDR cancer and therefore is worthy for further in vivo studies. [2]
