Shyobunone and isoshyobunone have insecticidal and repellant activity, they exhibit strong contact toxicity against Lasioderma serricorne (LS adults with LD50 values of 20.24 and 24.19 ug/adult, respectively; they are strongly repellent against Tribolium castaneum (TC) at 78.63 nL/cm2.

Repellant and insecticidal activities of shyobunone and isoshyobunone derived from the essential oil of Acorus calamus rhizomes.[Pubmed:26600710]

CONTEXT: It was found that the essential oil of Acorus calamus rhizomes showed insecticidal activity. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil from A. calamus rhizomes, evaluate insecticidal and repellant activity against Lasioderma serricorne (LS) and Tribolium castaneum (TC), and to isolate any insecticidal constituents from the essential oil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Essential oil from A. calamus was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) flame ionization detector and GC-mass spectrometry. The insecticidal and repellant activity of the essential oil and isolated compounds was tested using a variety of methods. RESULTS: The main components of the essential oil were identified to be isoShyobunone (15.56%), beta-asarone (10.03%), bicyclo[6.1.0]non-1-ene (9.67%), Shyobunone (9.60%) and methylisoeugenol (6.69%). Among them, the two active constituents were isolated and identified as Shyobunone and isoShyobunone. The essential oil showed contact toxicity against LS and TC with LD50 values of 14.40 and 32.55 mug/adult, respectively. The isolated compounds, Shyobunone and isoShyobunone also exhibited strong contact toxicity against LS adults with LD50 values of 20.24 and 24.19 mug/adult, respectively, while the LD50 value of isoShyobunone was 61.90 mug/adult for TC adults. The essential oil, Shyobunone and isoShyobunone were strongly repellent (98%, 90% and 94%, respectively, at 78.63 nL/cm(2), after 2 h treatment) against TC. CONCLUSION: The essential oil, Shyobunone and isoShyobunone possessed insecticidal and repellant activity against LS and TC.

[The effective parts of liangxue tongyu prescription on cooling-blood and activating-blood and analysis of chemical constituents by HPLC-MS and GC-MS].[Pubmed:25924481]

In order to clarify material basis of effective parts of liangxue tongyu prescription, blood-heat and blood-stasis rat model induced by dry yeast was established. The changes of rectal temperature, blood viscosity and plasma viscosity were used to evaluate the cooling-blood and activating-blood effects of liangxue tongyu prescription and its parts. Compared with the model group, the extract from liangxue tongyu prescription, its volatile oil and n-butanol part could significantly reduce rectal temperature (P<0.01), and also reduce blood viscosity and plasma viscosity to various degrees (P<0.01 or P<0.05). So volatile oil and n-butanol part were primarily identified as effective parts of liangxue tongyu prescription. By using GC-MS with normalization method of area to analyze volatile oil of liangxue tongyu prescription, 70 compounds were identified, accounting for about 92.54%, mainly as beta-asarone, paeonol, alpha-asarone and Shyobunone. 42 compounds such as peony glycosides, tannins, and iridoid glycosides were identified by HPLC-MS techniques and standard comparison. The study determined the effective parts of liangxue tongyu prescription and clarified the chemical composition providing the foundation for further studies on material basis of liangxue tongyu prescription.
