Dracocephalum is a genus of about 45 species of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae, native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They are annual or perennial herbaceous plants or subshrubs, growing to 15-90 cm tall. Dracocephalum ruyschiana, commonly known as Dragonhead, is a perennial. Dracocephalum ruyschiana was described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus. The name is considered as validly published. Dracocephalum ruyschiana has simple leaves. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems. They are mid green and lanceolate with entire margins. Dracocephalum ruyschiana is native to France, Central Europe, eastern Central Europe, Eastern Europe, the Apennine Peninsula, Northern Europe, the Caucasus, west Sibiria, east Sibiria, Central Asia, Mongolia and Manchuria. The flowers are tubular and purple. The plants bloom from July to August. The flowers are arranged in spikes. The fruits are schizocarps.
